A quick update on where I’m at (rather then the usual long-winded, self-indulgent story for a change)…
For those of you who don’t know, after 4 years in London, I’ve finally stopped the talking about making my great escape and am actually finally doing it. As a result, I am currently in the process of moving to Vancouver, Canada.
I use the phrase ‘in the process’ because while I did actually leave London two weeks ago (after many sad goodbyes to many a good friend) I’m currently still in transit. After some careful consideration and a distinct lack of planning I made the mistake of thinking that going via Caribbean would only be a small detour. Well, it turns out that the world is actually round and that the quickest way to fly from London to Vancouver is not in a straight line through New York as I wrongly assumed, but is instead by the relatively short trip over the North Pole. Unfortunately, by the time I realised this I’d already booked flights, bought tickets to the Cricket World Cup in Jamaica and promised a friend living in the Cayman Islands that I’d visit while I was in the area. Now I’m accepting responsibility for my actions and dutifully spending some time exploring this part of the world while I’m in the area.
So what have I found?
- The cricket was an enjoyable enough trip, it was cool see watch some cricket in the Caribbean but as far as games of cricket go I’ve seen better. Let’s just say that everything the papers are saying about how badly the World Cup has been run is pretty much spot on from what I saw.
- Although it might take me a while to stop sounding slightly English and get my full Aussie twang back, it hasn’t taken me long to stop looking English and get my full Aussie tan back. The view from Jono’s backyard where I’ve currently set-up camp for a while…’nuff said.
So where to from here? At some point in the next week or so I’ll have worn out my welcome here on Grand Cayman Island and will have to move on. Most likely Cuba will be my next stop. After that, who knows. It all depends on how long my bank balance holds out. Signs on that are looking good though, after two weeks I’m pretty sure my original estimate of being able to survive for 4-5 weeks was pretty pessimistic. I think I should be able to stretch that out to at least 7-8…
